Skin substitute products can be used in modern medicine when a wound cannot heal on its own or when tissue has been lost.
They help stabilize the wound bed and create an environment that supports natural healing processes.

How do chronic wounds develop?
Chronic wounds occur when the natural healing process does not function properly over time. Typical causes include:
- Circulatory disorders (e.g. venous leg ulcer, arterial occlusive disease)
- Metabolic diseases (e.g. diabetes mellitus → diabetic foot ulcer)
- Prolonged pressure (pressure ulcer / decubitus)
- Infections or a combination of factors
Such wounds often do not heal completely for months or years and require specialized treatment.
Acute surgical wounds with tissue defects
Acute wounds after accidents or surgery can also be difficult – especially when:
- Tissue has been lost (skin, subcutaneous tissue, muscle)
- Bone, tendons or vessels are exposed
- The wound cannot be closed (e.g. after tumor surgery or infection)
In these cases, skin substitute products can help cover the defect, support tissue formation and provide a basis for further surgical steps such as skin grafts.
